Latvian authorities have conducted several investigations into fraudulent activities and money laundering operations.

In mid-October, police concluded an investigation in Preiļi involving a Moldovan citizen suspected of fraud and money laundering. The case involved a victim being coerced into transferring funds to a “money mule” after being targeted by scammers posing as bank and telecommunications employees.

By late October, the Latvian State Police detained 11 individuals, including minors and elderly persons, for their roles as money launderers and couriers. These criminal groups utilized AI-generated videos and photos of government officials in social media advertisements to promote fraudulent investment platforms. Couriers were recruited to collect cash from victims and transport funds to specific locations. In a related incident, the Cybercrime Combat Department detained four additional money launderers following reports of victims losing over 67,000 euros to scammers impersonating police and bank staff.
