Efforts to increase financial oversight of the Latvian Saeima have progressed through legislative proposals and committee actions. Initially, the opposition party ‘Progresīvie’ submitted a proposal to amend the Law on the State Audit Office, arguing that Latvia is among the few European nations where legislative spending lacks public oversight. The party sought to allow the State Audit Office to conduct financial, efficiency, and compliance audits of the Saeima’s budget.

Following this, the Saeima’s State Administration and Local Government Committee moved to advance a bill granting the State Audit Office the right to conduct financial audits of the Saeima’s annual reports. This measure aims to ensure the parliament is audited under the same principles as other state institutions, though it would limit audits to financial accuracy to maintain constitutional independence.

Concurrently, the State Audit Office has proposed broader fiscal measures to increase the state budget by at least 190 million euros through enhanced revenue collection and expenditure efficiency, including recommendations regarding state forest dividends, Covid-19 program repayments, and the evaluation of tax reliefs.
