The FBI executed search warrants at LAUSD superintendent Alberto Carvalho’s home and district offices in February 2026, targeting a multimillion‑dollar AI‑chatbot contract with the defunct ed‑tech firm AllHere. Carvalho was placed on paid administrative leave while the federal inquiry continued.

In June 2026, the board prepared a vote to terminate Carvalho, citing unprofessional conduct, misuse of district resources, and bypassing IT policy by seeking access to the Telegram app. Specific allegations surfaced including the instruction to staff to remove a GPS tracking device from his district-issued SUV to hide his movements, and directing his district-paid driver to perform personal errands, such as transporting his wife to the airport and driving him and a female employee to social engagements. The board also accused him of accepting undisclosed benefits, including travel and Dodgers tickets, allegedly funded by AllHere.

Carvalho resigned on 21 June 2026, shortly before the planned termination vote. His legal team has rejected the allegations, calling the board's actions a “political hit job.” They assert that the use of a district vehicle and driver was permitted under his contract due to security concerns and that his use of secure messaging applications was known to district officials.

Federal investigators have also investigated raids on a Miami residence linked to a technology vendor and allege Carvalho failed to disclose over $107,000 in executive-coaching payments to Denver Public Schools superintendent Alex Marrero. No criminal charges have been filed. Acting superintendent Andrés Chait remains in charge while the board searches for a permanent replacement.
