Sources: 5. Developments: 2. Dallin H. Oaks, serving his first year as president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints following the death of Russell M. Nelson, has overseen a significant period of institutional activity. Under his leadership, the church has accelerated temple construction, with 13 temples consecrated and 18 new projects initiated, making 2026 one of the most active years for inaugurations in the movement’s history. This includes the announcement of the Otavalo temple in Ecuador, the first international sanctuary under his presidency. During this period, President Oaks has also engaged in public discourse regarding religious freedom. In an address at the Washington National Cathedral, he described the U.S. Constitution as a model for diverse populations to achieve self-government and a tool that compels divided people to build coalitions. While Oaks framed these principles as a means for peacemaking and unity, some observers have criticized his stance, arguing that his calls for compromise lack substance by failing to address specific contemporary political injustices or social harms. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-02: Dallin H.
