The League of Ireland Premier Division title race initially featured a three-way tie between Dublin clubs St. Patrick’s Athletic, Bohemians, and Shamrock Rovers, all at 59 points. At that stage, St. Patrick’s Athletic held the top position due to a superior goal difference of +27.

However, the competitive landscape shifted following a 1-0 defeat for St. Patrick’s Athletic against Derry City. This loss, combined with previous consecutive defeats, left St. Patrick’s Athletic six points behind league leaders Shamrock Rovers with only two games remaining, effectively ending their championship challenge.
