Thomas ‘Mukanya’ Mapfumo, a seminal figure in Zimbabwean music known for the Chimurenga genre, is being recognized for his cultural and political legacy. His work has historically integrated Shona proverbs and ancestral memory to express the struggle for liberation.

Following an eight-year absence, Mapfumo has returned to Zimbabwe after securing a US$1 million performance agreement with the late businessman Wicknell Chivayo. Although the death of Chivayo in a helicopter crash disrupted scheduled events, Mapfumo confirmed he received the full fee prior to his travel. He has committed to honoring his contractual obligations by performing at musician Jah Prayzah’s wedding once it is rescheduled.
