The late legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, often referred to as the ‘Nightingale of India’, is remembered for her vast musical career and her personal connection to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mangeshkar, who recorded songs in over 36 languages and received the Bharat Ratna in 2001, maintained a close relationship with Modi, whom she called ‘Narendra Bhai’. She was also a former member of the Rajya Sabha.

On her 97th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Modi paid tribute to her on social media, stating she illuminated India’s name globally through her talent and contributed immensely to the nation’s musical heritage. Singer Nitin Mukesh also shared remembrances of her and the historical musical partnership between Mangeshkar and his late father, Mukesh.

Additional tributes on her birth anniversary came from veteran actor Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, and singer Roop Kumar Rathod, who described her voice as a cultural force and an emotion that has touched generations. Reflecting on her long career, accounts of her early life note significant challenges, such as the loss of her father in 1942 and the omission of her debut song from her first film. Her career, which began in the 1940s, included collaborations with renowned composers such as AR Rahman and RD Burman, and she was also a recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan.
