The Dominican Republic is observing the tenth anniversary of the death of Hatuey De Camps Jiménez, a prominent and controversial political figure.

De Camps first rose to prominence in 1970 as the leader of the Federación de Estudiantes Dominicanos (FED) at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD). During his tenure, he was known for uniting university groups through mass mobilizations and navigating complex political alliances, such as the ‘Unidad de Acero’. After a contested re-election as Secretary General of the FED, he moved to Europe to pursue doctoral studies.

Following his time as a student leader, De Camps became a lifelong activist and served as a key collaborator and strategist for José Francisco Peña Gómez after the 1973 division of the Dominican Revolutionary Party.
