On August 18, 2026, Julio Antonio Jalit, the mayor of Pichanal, was involved in a fatal traffic accident on National Route 34 near Calilegua, Jujuy. Jalit was driving a municipal Toyota Hilux when it collided with a motorcycle operated by 40-year-old Rubén Marino Guitián, an employee of Ingenio Ledesma. Guitián died instantly at the scene due to severe head trauma.

Following the incident, Jalit was provisionally charged with involuntary manslaughter. As the investigation progressed, the charge was upgraded to aggravated involuntary manslaughter. While a breathalyzer test showed no alcohol was present in the mayor's system, investigators have explored whether the municipal vehicle was traveling at high speed. 

A criminologist's accidentology report is pending to clarify the exact mechanics of the collision. Although the mayor's defense confirmed a $310 million settlement agreement for the victim's family, legal proceedings regarding criminal liability continue.
