In Mexico, political debate continues regarding proposed regulations on audience rights. PAN deputy Jorge Soto has warned these could serve as “tools for political pressure against journalists and media outlets,” potentially reviving authoritarian practices similar to the 1970s PRI era. Meanwhile, the state legislature in Campeche is reviewing a proposal to create a protection mechanism for journalists and human rights defenders. This initiative, confirmed by legal counsel Adrián Serrano Barrientos, would establish an inter-institutional committee and a consultative council to involve journalists in safety decisions.

In Peru, the Consenso por la Democracia alliance—including Juntos por el Perú and Ahora Nación—is advocating for the repeal of several laws they characterize as “pro-crime.” The alliance has proposed five legislative projects to overturn laws that they claim restrict criminal investigations, limit asset recovery, and grant impunity to military and police personnel. 

In response to legislative pressures, the Peruvian Ministry of Justice and Human Rights has established a temporary sectoral working group to conduct a comprehensive review of current criminal legislation. Chaired by the Vice Minister of Justice, this group includes representatives from the National Penitentiary Council and the General Directorate of Criminological Affairs. The group aims to formulate proposals to strengthen the legal framework and optimize the prevention, investigation, prosecution, and punishment of crimes, incorporating academic and civil society input.
