Leica has announced the release of the Summicron-M 66mm f/2, a limited edition lens that serves as a modern reinterpretation of the historic Elcan 66mm f/2. The original lens was a highly exclusive optic designed in the late 1960s for the United States Navy for espionage photography, with only approximately 200 units ever produced.

The new version features updated internal components to meet contemporary standards while retaining unique design elements from its military predecessor, such as a rotating aperture ring that moves in the opposite direction of standard M-mount lenses.

Production is limited to 660 units worldwide. The first unit, bearing serial number 001, is scheduled to be auctioned at the Leitz Photographica Auction in Wetzlar in November 2026.
