Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179) was a prominent German Benedictine abbess, mystic, and polymath. She is noted for her leadership at the Disibodenberg convent and the subsequent founding of the Rupertsberg and Eibingen monasteries.

Her diverse contributions include composing monodic hymns, antiphons, and psalms, making her the first Western woman to have her name recorded as a musician. As a theologian and naturalist, she documented her mystical visions in works such as ‘Scivias’ and provided expertise in medicine and the natural sciences.

Throughout her life, she advised political and religious leaders and engaged in preaching travels. In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI canonized her and named her a ‘Doctor of the Church’ in recognition of her spiritual influence and teachings.
