The 2026 municipal election campaign in Lima began with concerns regarding candidate feasibility. Analysts noted that many candidates made promises, such as building hospitals or expanding education, that exceed the legal and financial authority of local governments.

By mid-August, the electoral process moved into a legal phase as the Special Electoral Jury of Central Lima cleared four major mayoral candidates—Rafael López Aliaga, Francis Allison, Carlos Bruce, and Daniel Urresti—to remain in the race. Challenges against López Aliaga and Allison were dismissed due to filing deadlines, while the challenge against Urresti was rejected following a Constitutional Court decision that annulled a previous prison sentence.

Polling data from Datum International indicated that Rafael López Aliaga rose to 16% in voter intention following the resignation of Luis Rubio, placing him slightly ahead of Carlos Bruce, who held 13%.
