A decade-long observational study from Kyushu University in Japan has established a significant correlation between periodontal disease and an increased risk of neurological decline. By tracking nearly 1,400 adults aged 60 and older, researchers found that specific symptoms of gum disease are strong indicators of dementia risk.

Findings published in The Journal of Clinical Periodontology indicate that individuals experiencing frequent gum bleeding were 56 percent more likely to develop all-cause dementia and 61 percent more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Other indicators, such as significant gum recession and deep gaps between teeth and gums, were also linked to higher risks of cognitive decline. Researchers suggest that progressive inflammation associated with these oral health issues may contribute to the pathology of neurodegenerative disorders.
