Speculation regarding Lionel Messi’s future has centered on a potential return to his childhood club, Newell’s Old Boys, in Argentina. While Messi remains under contract with Inter Miami through 2028, Conmebol President Alejandro Domínguez has suggested a return is possible, noting, “Why not? It depends on the president... I think his heart is there.”

Reports indicate that a move to the Rosario-based club could occur as early as January 2027. Such a transition would require negotiations with Inter Miami management to establish whether the arrangement would involve a permanent transfer, a loan, or another form of cooperation. Currently, Inter Miami is reportedly discussing post-retirement roles for Messi, including the possibility of him becoming a club shareholder.
