Researchers at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the United States have developed a new recycling method for lithium-ion batteries that could potentially double the lifespan of new batteries.

Led by professor Yan Wang, the study published in ‘Advanced Energy Materials’ focuses on recovering materials from both the cathode and the anode, rather than just the cathode as is common in many current recycling processes. The team successfully converted used cathode materials with low nickel content into advanced NMC622 material and improved the quality of recovered graphite for use in anodes.

When these recycled materials were used to construct new battery cells, the resulting cells lasted approximately twice as long as those produced using commercially available recycled materials. Laboratory tests revealed that after 2,590 charge and discharge cycles, the cells maintained 70% of their original capacity. This performance is attributed to fewer side chemical reactions and facilitated lithium-ion movement. This advancement could significantly reduce battery waste and the environmental impact of mining valuable resources.
