The Lithuanian government has introduced measures to mitigate the impact of high fuel prices and inflation on public transport users.

Initially, the government implemented a 50 percent discount on local train tickets, a measure expected to remain in place until the end of the year. This initiative, managed by LTG Link, aims to attract approximately 45,000 new passengers despite rising operational costs for the LTG group caused by energy market fluctuations. In addition to the discounts, new Swiss-made Stadler trains are expected to begin service at the end of October.

Following the rail initiative, the government approved amendments to the Public Passenger Transport Benefits Act to provide a 50 percent discount on long-distance bus tickets for November and December. Proposed by Transport Minister Juras Taminskas, the measure aims to alleviate financial burdens on citizens, including students, seniors, and families. To prevent price manipulation, the state will compensate carriers based on tariffs set for September 1, 2026, with the total cost to the state estimated at approximately 3.15 million EUR.

While officials initially aimed for a November 1 implementation, legislative processes in the Seimas may delay the final vote until around November 12 due to Constitutional Court restrictions regarding emergency procedures. The train subsidy initiative is expected to cost the state roughly 2.8 million EUR.
