Lithuanian cultural institutions have announced various programming and festivals for the upcoming season.

Major drama theatres in Vilnius and Kaunas are preparing for new seasons, including the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre’s 87th season, themed ‘Beyond Time’. In Vilnius, the Old Theatre will host the Estonian company ‘Südalinna’ this October. They will perform ‘Dievų aušra’ (Dawn of the Gods), a play by Marius Ivaškevičius directed by Elmo Nüganen. The production, which received recognition at the EURODRAM competition, explores the life of filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravičius and will be performed with both Estonian and Russian casts.

Regional theatres are also launching new seasons. The Alytus City Theatre is beginning its 37th season under the theme ‘Temperature’, exploring physical and emotional comfort through the works of four directors, including Romanian director Catinca Drăgănescu. Following the opening play ‘Dairosi Dievas nuo kalno’, the theatre will present ‘Witch and Rain’ (Raguna ir lietus), based on a novel by Jurgos Ivanauskaitė, on October 2 and 3.

In Telšiai, the Žemaitė Drama Theatre is starting its season despite ongoing reconstruction work. Director Deividas Rajunčius described the season as a search for humanity. The season begins on September 19 with the premiere of ‘The God of Slaughter’ (Skerdynių dievas), directed by B. Tserediani. The venue will also host the 5th ‘teatRADIMAI’ theatre festival and the 4th ‘ŠOK‘as’ professional dance festival.

Other activities include the Vilnius International Theatre Festival ‘Sirenos’, set to begin September 23, and Stalo teatras’s production ‘Eglė žalčių karalienė’ in the Radviliškis district.
