Medical reports in China have highlighted the health risks of consuming raw or undercooked freshwater fish, specifically regarding liver fluke (Clonorchis sinensis) infections.

Initial reports detailed the case of a mukbang streamer who developed an infection after consuming raw freshwater fish 14 times in one year. The diagnosis required specialized blood antibody tests and CT scans after standard stool tests failed to detect the parasite. The streamer has since removed raw fish content from her channel to warn viewers.

Subsequent reports documented more severe clinical outcomes, including a 55-year-old man in Hangzhou who required a partial hepatectomy due to a massive liver abscess caused by the parasite. Additionally, the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention identified an infection cluster in Zhengzhou, Henan province, where five individuals contracted the parasite after eating raw fish slices at a Cantonese restaurant.

Medical experts warn that while infections can remain asymptomatic for months, they can lead to serious conditions such as cholecystitis, cholangitis, liver cirrhosis, and increased risks of liver cancer. Professionals emphasize that seasonings and alcohol are ineffective at killing parasites and that thorough cooking is the only reliable prevention method.
