Efforts to protect livestock from wolf predation are evolving through both biological and technological approaches in Europe.

In the Veluwe region of the Netherlands, shepherds have introduced Maremmano-Abruzzese dogs to safeguard sheep flocks. These dogs serve as a deterrent, using barking and presence to convince wolves that the sheep are difficult targets. This measure follows the observation of increasing wolf activity and the limitations of existing electric fencing.

In the Veneto region of Italy, authorities are evaluating the use of robotic dogs to act as “dynamic sentinels.” These devices are designed to patrol pasture perimeters and activate deterrent systems. However, this technological approach has faced criticism from regional officials who argue that such solutions may be disconnected from the practical and economic realities of mountain farming, calling instead for more concrete wolf population containment plans.
