Reports from maritime industry organizations highlight evolving infrastructure and fleet requirements for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector.

DNV has indicated that the global LNG bunker vessel fleet may need to more than double by 2030 to meet rising demand. The organization warns that without increased investment, fuel supply could constrain the maritime sector’s transition to alternative fuels. To accelerate market development, the report suggests converting suitable small-scale LNG carriers into bunker vessels.

In a separate analysis presented at Gastech 2026, Lloyd’s Register Advisory identified 200,000m³ LNG carriers as a viable option for global fleet renewal. While these larger vessels would be compatible with 88 terminals worldwide—down from 97 for conventional 174,000m³ vessels—they offer increased cargo capacity and reduced transportation costs. The study notes that the shift toward larger carriers aims to improve efficiency by moving more cargo per voyage.
