In Ecuador, local commerce and entrepreneurship are utilizing urban public spaces to drive economic activity. In Quito, traditional Sunday markets in plazas and parks, such as San Francisco and El Ejido, serve as essential gathering points for informal vendors, many of whom maintain family-based trades.

In Guayaquil, municipal support through ÉPICO EP has facilitated entrepreneurship fairs, such as one at Plaza Pilsener in the Las Peñas district, to showcase local artisanal businesses and stimulate tourism.

Recent financial reports from the Municipality of Guayaquil indicate significant revenue growth, with $254.3 million collected in taxes, fees, and contributions between January and September 2026. This marks a 16.34% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Key drivers include the 1.5 per thousand tax on total assets, waste collection fees, and urban property taxes. However, the Special Contribution for Improvements (CEM) has faced public scrutiny from citizens who claim they do not see corresponding infrastructure works in their sectors.

To support economic integration, the city is implementing reforms to simplify municipal procedures for the regularization of buildings and economic activities. A sixth reform to the ordinance for cadastral updating and building regularization has been approved. Since May 2023, this initiative has processed 70,644 requests, with approximately 75% of approved requests involving properties that host neighborhood businesses, such as grocery stores, hair salons, and clinics, helping to integrate them into the formal municipal registry.
