Research published in The Lancet Public Health indicates that London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is associated with improved lung health and accelerated lung growth in children. The findings stem from the CHILL (Children’s Health in London and Luton) project, which tracked over 3,400 children aged six to nine across 84 primary schools between 2018 and 2022.

By comparing London to Luton, a comparable city without emission restrictions, researchers observed that nitrogen dioxide levels in London declined more than twice as fast as in Luton. This reduction in pollution contributed to a narrowing gap in lung function between the two locations. Specifically, the proportion of children in central London with impaired lung function decreased from 14 percent to 9 percent.

The study, coordinated by Queen Mary University of London with contributions from various academic institutions, suggests that limiting highly polluting vehicles may allow children’s lungs to recover lost growth and serves as an effective public health intervention.
