The Los Angeles Lakers continue to refine their roster and defensive identity under head coach JJ Redick. To bolster the rotation, the team signed veteran Matisse Thybulle to a one-year, $3.2 million contract, hoping his experience can provide impact despite recent declines in playing time.

Following the departure of LeBron James to the Philadelphia 76ers, Redick addressed scrutiny regarding his roster construction comments. He clarified that his assertion that the current pieces ‘fit together’ was intended to reflect the team’s improved depth, shooting, and defensive versatility rather than disparage James. Redick noted that the roster, built around superstar Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, now offers enhanced ball-handling and rim protection through additions such as Collin Sexton, Quentin Grimes, and Walker Kessler.

Dončić has also drawn attention during the preseason. Redick highlighted the star’s physical transformation, noting he arrived at training camp in ‘fantastic shape’ following intensive sprint work. This conditioning was evident during preseason play, where Dončić recorded 21 points in 16 minutes. Regarding the team’s recent transition, Dončić expressed mutual respect for James, noting he enjoyed their time as teammates and reached out to him following his exit from the franchise. Despite external skepticism regarding the team’s championship potential, Redick stated he remains focused on internal development rather than public perception.
