The Community of Madrid, led by President Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has conducted several award ceremonies at the Real Casa de Correos. In October, the Siete Estrellas del Deporte awards were presented to recognize excellence in regional sports. Recipients included basketball player Sergio Rodríguez and race walker María Pérez as the best athletes for 2024, while motorcycle racers Marc and Álex Márquez were honored for 2025. In November, it was announced that President Ayuso would present the Madrid International Medal to Chilean President José Antonio Kast. This distinction, the highest honor from the regional government, recognizes international figures for their societal impact. Kast joins previous recipients including Pope Leo XIV, Javier Milei, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Edmundo González. On November 1, 2026, President Ayuso officially awarded the Madrid International Medal to President Kast during his first official European tour since assuming office in March. Ayuso praised Kast for his commitment to security, economic liberalism, and the defense of institutions, noting he represents the “defense of freedom, security, and economic prosperity.” Kast stated that the distinction belongs to the Chilean nation and emphasized that security is the primary duty of the state. While Ayuso defended the honor as a recognition of shared democratic values, left-wing opposition members in Spain criticized the move, characterizing the award as a political endorsement of the international far-right. Kast’s visit coincided with the 30th Ibero-American Summit held in Madrid on November 4 and 5, 2026. While the summit aimed to revitalize the forum, several major leaders, including the presidents of Brazil and Mexico, were absent, sending foreign ministers instead. To ensure consensus, negotiators drafted a joint declaration that avoids explicit mention of the U.S. blockade of Cuba.
