Researchers at the University of Málaga have developed a new in vitro diagnostic technology utilizing magnetic nanoparticles to identify allergies to betalactam antibiotics, such as amoxicillin and penicillins. 

The technology employs 30nm particles featuring an iron oxide core and a silica shell. These particles act as magnets to capture IgE antibodies in a patient’s blood more efficiently than current methods. This platform aims to improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce the high rates of overdiagnosis associated with penicillin allergies. 

The research was a collaborative effort involving the University of Málaga, IBIMA Plataforma BIONAD, the Inflammatory Diseases Network (REI), and the Málaga University Regional Hospital.
