A collection of 688 handwritten notes by Mahatma Gandhi, written to his associate Anand T. Hingorani, sold for a record ₹16.2 crore ($1.70 million) at an auction organized by Mumbai-based Saffronart. The auction, titled ‘Gandhi: From the Collection of Anand T. Hingorani’, set a world record for Indian historical documents sold at auction.

The manuscripts consist of daily reflections written by Gandhi between November 1944 and October 1946. These notes were intended to provide spiritual guidance and consolation to Hingorani, a freedom fighter, following the death of his wife, Vidya. Addressing themes of truth, non-violence, God, and self-restraint, the writings were later compiled into the book ‘A Thought for the Day.’

In addition to the notes, the collection included personal items such as a ‘peti charkha’ (portable spinning wheel), letters, and photographs related to the Indian independence movement. Preserved by the Hingorani family, the collection offers rare personal insight into Gandhi’s philosophy and private correspondence during the final years of British rule in India.
