Sources: 7. Developments: 2. A political debate has emerged in Maine regarding the characterization of Israeli military actions in Gaza. The controversy centers on the use of the term ‘genocide’ to describe the conflict. Initial discussions involved criticisms of Maine Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Troy Jackson for using the label. Opponents, such as Lawrence Gardner, argued that such accusations constitute ‘Hamas propaganda’ and antisemitism. Conversely, proponents of the term cited findings from international bodies, including the United Nations and the International Court of Justice, which have investigated charges of genocidal acts. As the situation progressed, Troy Jackson addressed the debate directly in an interview. He stated that the war in Gaza ‘fits that description’ of genocide and expressed that it is ‘unfortunate’ when some Jewish residents in Maine decline to use the term. Jackson also criticized the United States for providing what he termed ‘blank checks’ to the Israeli government and referred to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a ‘war criminal.’ ## Timeline ### 2026-09-30: Troy Jackson criticizes Maine Jewish voters over Gaza genocide label Maine Democratic Senate nominee Troy Jackson criticized Jewish voters who avoid calling the Gaza war a genocide, citing the Holocaust, and called for an end to U.S. military aid to Israel. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/troy-jackson-criticizes-maine-jewish-voters-over-gaza-genocide-label ### 2026-09-05: Maine political debate erupts over Israel genocide allegations Debate intensifies over the use of ‘genocide’ allegations against Israel, involving Maine political figures and findings from international human rights organizations. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/maine-political-debate-erupts-over-israel-genocide-allegations --- Cite as: Maine political debate over Gaza genocide allegations.
