The Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) has moved forward with renewable energy infrastructure developments in Aroostook County. Initially, Avangrid, a subsidiary of Iberdrola, was selected to develop a 1,200 MW transmission line as part of the Northern Maine Renewable Energy Development Program. This project is designed to connect wind energy potential in the region to the New England electrical grid via 345 kV overhead lines and a new substation in Haynesville.

Following this selection, regulators approved a massive 800-megawatt wind farm project in the county, which is expected to be the largest renewable energy project in Maine’s history. The wind farm development is linked to the 111-mile transmission line project. Governor Janet Mills noted that the initiative aims to provide affordable and reliable power, strengthen the electrical grid, and create thousands of jobs in rural communities. While the project may face federal review, officials indicate that approximately three-quarters of the generated energy will stay within Maine, with the remainder distributed to the New England region.
