Developments: 4. Kenya is preparing for several high-profile international sporting events. In late 2026, the Super 90 League announced its fourth season will debut in Nairobi, featuring a 90-ball franchise cricket format. President William Ruto has confirmed that European football clubs Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam will play a match on January 5, 2027, to officially inaugurate the 60,000-capacity Raila Odinga International Stadium at the Talanta Sports City complex. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya stated the fixture will serve as a critical test for Kenya’s readiness to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania. Organizers intend to use the event to evaluate security, transport, emergency evacuation, and immigration procedures, while technical teams will test broadcasting systems. While the project has faced scrutiny regarding its 48 billion Kenyan shilling cost, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi clarified that “sponsors have been secured to cover the costs,” asserting that the government will not use public funds. Mwangi also dismissed rumors that the match would feature only legends, stating that senior squads have been approached. Legal challenges have also emerged. The High Court recently declined to certify as urgent a petition from six individuals seeking to halt the match. The petitioners alleged potential constitutional violations regarding the use of public funds and sought to prevent the government from entering into financial contracts related to the event until expenditure compliance is demonstrated. Media commentator Alex Mwakideu has urged citizens to focus on the sporting significance of the event rather than its politicization. ## Timeline ### 2026-11-03: Kenya to test AFCON readiness with Bayern Munich vs Ajax friendly Kenya will host a Bayern Munich vs Ajax friendly in January 2027 to test security and ticketing systems ahead of AFCON 2027, despite legal challenges regarding the use of public funds. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/kenya-to-test-afcon-readiness-with-bayern-munich-vs-ajax-friendly ### 2026-10-31: Kenya to host Bayern Munich and Ajax for stadium opening Kenya will host Bayern Munich and Ajax senior teams for the January 2027 opening of the Raila Odinga International Stadium, funded by private sponsors to boost tourism and AFCON preparations. 8 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/kenya-to-host-bayern-munich-and-ajax-for-stadium-opening ### 2026-10-28: Kenya to host Bayern Munich and Ajax for new stadium opening Bayern Munich and Ajax will face off on January 5, 2027, to inaugurate Kenya’s new 60,000-seat Raila Odinga International Stadium in Nairobi. 32 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/bayern-munich-and-ajax-to-play-inaugural-match-at-raila-odinga-international-stadium ### 2026-09-30: Super 90 League to debut in Nairobi in December 2026 The Super 90 League will debut in Nairobi, Kenya, from December 3 to 12, 2026, featuring six franchise teams and a 90-ball cricket format with international and retired Kenyan players. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/super-90-league-to-debut-in-nairobi-in-december-2026 --- Cite as: Major sporting events in Kenya.
