Following the formal establishment of diplomatic relations with Kazakhstan during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, the two nations began exploring opportunities for Kazakhstan to export wheat to Malawi. This potential trade would mark Kazakhstan’s first direct entry into the sub-Saharan African wheat market, providing Malawi with a way to diversify imports currently dominated by Russia and Australia. In a separate regional development, Malawi and Mozambique signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Tete regarding sanitary and phytosanitary measures. This agreement aims to reduce cross-border barriers and simplify the movement of agricultural products by harmonizing requirements and strengthening institutional coordination. The partnership intends to utilize the Beira and Nacala transport corridors to improve Malawi’s access to international markets through Mozambican ports. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-22: Mozambique and Malawi sign agricultural trade agreement Mozambique and Malawi signed an agreement on sanitary and phytosanitary measures to ease agricultural trade, reduce border barriers, and protect public health through improved coordination. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/mozambique-and-malawi-sign-agricultural-trade-agreement ### 2026-10-05: Kazakhstan and Malawi explore wheat trade and diplomatic ties Kazakhstan and Malawi are discussing agricultural cooperation, including potential wheat exports from Kazakhstan to Malawi, marking a possible entry into the sub-Saharan African market. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/kazakhstan-and-malawi-explore-wheat-trade-and-diplomatic-ties --- Cite as: Malawi agricultural trade and diplomatic developments.
