Malawi is expanding its formal gold-trading network to increase foreign exchange earnings, create jobs, and combat smuggling. The Export Development Fund (EDF) is establishing four new trading centres in Karonga, Mzimba (Jenda), Mangochi, and Blantyre through a partnership with FDH Bank and the Reserve Bank of Malawi. This initiative aims to bring official buying services closer to mining communities to reduce reliance on informal black markets.

Since the formal gold market was established in 2021, Malawi has purchased 1.63 tonnes of gold through official channels. Government officials estimate the nation loses approximately $700 million annually to illicit trade. To bolster the sector, the Malawi Mining Investment Company (Mamico) plans to begin mining and processing gold next year, following geological investigations that identified seven primary gold-bearing deposits.

To achieve long-term economic diversification, Malawi has set a target of $30 billion in mining exports by 2040. This strategy seeks to leverage deposits of uranium, graphite, rare earth elements, rutile, and niobium to move the economy beyond tobacco. To support this, the World Bank plans to provide approximately $70 million in financing for a mineral value chains project aimed at improving geological data collection, licensing administration, and addressing infrastructure deficits.

In an effort to refine its governance, a Malawian ministerial delegation recently visited Ghana as part of a South-South Learning Exchange Programme. The delegation studied Ghana’s regulatory frameworks, gold production experience, and mineral traceability efforts to inform Malawi’s own mining reforms.
