As Malaysia prepares for Budget 2027, government ministries and experts are addressing fiscal challenges posed by energy costs and global oil price volatility.

The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has requested that the Ministry of Finance maintain fuel subsidies, specifically the Subsidized Diesel Control System (SKDS) and cooking oil subsidies, to protect citizens. KPDN also advocated for continuing cash assistance programs like Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA).

Economy Minister Datuk Seri Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir has confirmed that 2027 development spending will proceed as scheduled, despite concerns that rising oil prices may increase the government’s subsidy burden. While the Ministry of Economy maintains its long-term development commitments, the minister noted that managing specific fiscal pressures and subsidy requirements remains the responsibility of the Finance Ministry.

In addition to fuel, experts are urging the government to prioritize electricity costs in the upcoming budget. Professor Madya Ir Dr Jasrul Jamani Jamian, Director of the Centre for Community and Industrial Networking (CCIN), noted that fuel costs are directly linked to electricity tariff settings. To mitigate current costs, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has implemented protections for over eight million domestic users by increasing the threshold to 800 kWh per month, exempting nearly one million additional users from certain adjustments and retail charges.
