Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim initially expressed solidarity with former Indonesian President Joko Widodo following volcanic disasters and haze challenges in Indonesia. During a telephone call, Anwar emphasized the “deep historical, cultural, and fraternal ties” between the two nations.

As the haze situation progressed, the focus shifted toward accountability for forest fires. Anwar stated that Malaysia would not protect local companies involved in Indonesian forest burning activities that contribute to transboundary haze. He asserted that Indonesian authorities should be permitted to take action against responsible parties, including Malaysian companies operating in Indonesia, provided actions are based on evidence.

Additionally, Anwar called for ASEAN ministers to address transboundary air pollution more seriously, suggesting that regional mechanisms require improvement to better manage the impact on public health.
