Manchester United has focused on defensive recruitment to address squad depth and long-term vulnerabilities. In late August 2026, the club reportedly targeted Aston Villa defender Ian Maatsen to provide competition and backup for Luke Shaw in the left-back position.

By late September 2026, the club’s recruitment strategy appeared to expand toward a broader defensive overhaul planned for 2027. This includes seeking central defensive reinforcements to eventually replace Harry Maguire and provide succession for Lisandro Martinez. Identified targets include RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba and Tottenham Hotspur’s Micky van de Ven, though interest in the latter involves competition from Liverpool.
