In mid-September 2026, Manchester United faced significant squad depth issues due to injuries, with manager Michael Carrick managing up to 15 potentially unavailable players. During this period, the future of veteran defender Luke Shaw was uncertain; while Carrick noted Shaw ‘could possibly be fit’ for upcoming fixtures, reports indicated the club might not extend his contract, which was set to expire in June 2027.

By late September, the club’s stance shifted. Manchester United announced plans to enter contract negotiations with Shaw early next year. However, new injury concerns emerged following a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in October. Shaw was replaced by Ayden Heaven in the 95th minute and was reportedly seen ‘limping and appearing uncomfortable’ while leaving Old Trafford.

By October 11, these concerns were confirmed as Shaw missed training and was ruled out of the UEFA Champions League fixture against Atletico Madrid. The injury crisis extended to midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who also missed training and will not travel for the match. The squad depletion is extensive, with Patrick Dorgu, Noussair Mazraoui, Benjamin Sesko, and Manuel Ugarte also unavailable. This has left the team thin in critical areas, particularly at left-back.

Despite these setbacks, the squad received a boost with the return of defender Matthijs de Ligt to the traveling squad following a year-long absence due to a back injury. Manchester United enters the Champions League clash under pressure, having secured only six points from their opening six Premier League matches, marking their worst start in 40 years.
