On July 29, 2026, a violent confrontation erupted in Bitiyang/Bitiang village, Noney district, Manipur, when members of the Naga Village Guard (NVG) opened fire on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Cobra Battalion operation. The clash, which reportedly lasted nearly an hour, killed 22-year-old NVG volunteer Lanbilung Riamei (also referred to as Lanbimei Riamei) and wounded several others, including two CoBRA personnel who sustained shrapnel or splinter wounds and three NVG members.

In the immediate aftermath, the Joint Tribe Council (JTC) of Manipur ordered an indefinite shutdown of national highways, railway projects, and other infrastructure across districts inhabited by the Inpui, Liangmai, Rongmei, and Zeme communities, while exempting essential services like health, education, and telecommunications. 

Local tribal communities and organizations, including the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM), have condemned the operation, describing it as an “unprovoked assault.” The JTC-Manipur Working Committee accused the Cobra team and the Jaliyangrong United Front of involvement in the attack, demanding arrests, a halt to security operations in Naga villages, and the removal of CoBRA personnel from the area. The incident has caused significant communication disruptions in the Bitiang-Tupul area and maintains a heavy security presence in the region.
