Former Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has recently received recognition and issued warnings regarding the social climate in Portugal.

In September 2026, the Association of the Foreign Press in Portugal (AIEP) named him ‘Personality of the Year 2025’. AIEP President Vicente Nunes highlighted the former leader’s defense of the rule of law, press freedom, and immigrant rights. During his acceptance speech, Rebelo de Sousa emphasized his historical connection to the media.

By October 2026, Rebelo de Sousa shifted focus to social stability, warning of the dangers posed by ‘intolerance, emotional radicalization, and individuals claiming to be the sole owners of truth’. Speaking at the Mário Soares and Maria Barroso Foundation, he cautioned that such radicalism could destroy social cohesion if political and economic structures fail to address the underlying causes of these societal shifts.
