Sources: 192. Developments: 2. Following Republican losses in the 2026 midterm elections, reports emerged suggesting U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio might resign to prepare for a 2028 presidential campaign or to distance himself from the administration’s involvement in the Iran war. Rubio dismissed these claims in an interview, stating it has “always been my plan” to serve until the end of the term. The State Department and the White House rejected the reports, with Assistant Secretary Dylan Johnson calling them “completely baseless fake news.” Amidst these rumors, Rubio has reportedly moved to tighten internal controls within the State Department. He has warned staff against conflicts of interest and emphasized that unethical behavior would lead to termination. This follows the resignation of U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle, who denied allegations of selling access to administration officials. Additionally, Rubio has reportedly instructed that significant policy decisions be coordinated through his office or Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau. Following these directives, State Department policy chief Jeremy Lewin was reportedly forced out of his position due to concerns regarding a lack of coordination. ## Timeline ### 2026-11-07: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio denies resignation rumors US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has denied rumors of his resignation while reportedly tightening State Department oversight to prevent conflicts of interest and ensure policy coordination. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/us-secretary-of-state-marco-rubio-denies-resignation-rumors ### 2026-11-05: Marco Rubio denies reports of planned resignation U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied reports that he plans to resign from the Trump administration to pursue a 2028 presidential bid, calling the claims baseless following Republican midterm losses. 190 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/marco-rubio-may-resign-secretary-of-state-to-pursue-presidency --- Cite as: Marco Rubio resignation rumors and State Department changes.
