The inaugural Mario Trufelli National Journalism Prize was held in Tricarico to honor the legacy of journalist Mario Trufelli. The event included the presentation of a digital archive and handwritten notes by Erasmo Bitetti, who discussed the relationship between memory and news, specifically referencing Trufelli’s historical work in Southern Italy and the Basilicata region.

Bitetti explained how the past serves as a lens to interpret a community’s present, highlighting specific historical contributions such as a 1963 report on the condition of peasants in Southern Italy. He noted that historical facts, voices, and images can illuminate current events and provide essential context for journalists working in the modern era.

Created by Renato Cantore, the award is designed to support young information professionals by providing a platform to demonstrate technical skill and commitment to journalism as a “civic duty.” The initiative aims to transform Trufelli’s memory into opportunities for aspiring journalists to showcase their work through rigorous and responsible reporting.
