Since the July 2024 NATO summit in Ankara, Romania has expanded both maritime and aerial counter-drone capabilities. Following a series of Russian UAV incursions, the July 2026 deployment of Spanish F-18 Hornets, an A400M tanker, and NH-90 anti-drone helicopters to Mihail Kogălniceanu reinforced the eastern-flank air-defence rotation.

This deployment follows a period of heightened tension in late July 2026, when Romanian F-16s shot down three drones on 24, 25, and 26 July. In response to these incursions, DSU chief Raed Arafat urged public preparedness for potential crises, while officials discussed activating NATO’s Article 4 for emergency consultations.

As part of Operation Eastern Sentry, Spain has transitioned from a traditional Air Policing mission to a broader Air Defence role, replacing an Italian detachment that had provided Quick Reaction Alert services. To facilitate this, Bulgaria, Romania, and Spain signed a technical agreement allowing Spanish fighter jets to conduct cross-border patrols over Romanian and Bulgarian airspace. This arrangement, part of NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence System, aims to enhance the alliance’s ability to respond to airspace violations and strengthen collective defence on the eastern flank.

These developments build upon earlier maritime security efforts, including the response to a June 2026 incident where a Ukrainian-supplied maritime drone self-detonated near Constanța. Romania continues to integrate advanced technologies, such as the U.S. MEROPS anti-drone system and Triton maritime drones, to protect its Black Sea coast and airspace from hybrid threats.
