Maritime authorities in Southeast Asia have intercepted significant shipments of narcotics and drug-related materials.

In Indonesia, the Navy and various national agencies seized approximately 1.3 tons of suspected ketamine from the Tanzanian-flagged vessel MV King Sundi in the Riau Islands. The shipment, valued between Rp2.1 trillion and over Rp4.5 trillion, was discovered following three months of intelligence monitoring. Eight crew members, including one Taiwanese national and seven Myanmar nationals, were detained. Investigations by the National Police Criminal Investigation Agency revealed that the vessel had previously attempted to smuggle ketamine in February 2026 destined for the Philippines and on another occasion destined for Taiwan. The intercepted 1,298 kilograms were loaded in the South China Sea before being intercepted in the North Natuna Sea.

Following the seizure, authorities in Batam destroyed the 1.3 tons of ketamine, noting the shipment could have potentially affected 6.5 million people. Muhammad Qodari, Head of the Government Communication Agency (Bakom), highlighted Batam’s strategic location as an international trade route, necessitating strengthened surveillance. This incident occurs amid rising domestic drug use; the 2025 National Prevalence Survey reported an increase in drug abuse prevalence from 1.73% in 2023 to 2.11% in 2025, affecting approximately 4.15 million residents.

In Malaysia, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency intercepted a shipment of drug precursors near Klebang. The seizure consisted of 67 bottles of controlled chemical liquids used for processing synthetic drugs, with an estimated value of RM4.958 million. While no arrests were made in the Malaysian incident, authorities have committed to intensifying maritime patrols to combat cross-border crime.
