The maritime industry is advancing zero-emission and eco-friendly shipping technologies through new vessel orders and technological showcases. GMI has ordered two hydrogen-powered coastal bulk carriers from Chowgule Shipyards in India to operate in Norwegian waters. These vessels, expected to enter service in 2029, will utilize hydrogen system solutions from eCap Marine, including PEM fuel cell technology. At Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, HD Hyundai and its affiliates showcased next-generation gas carrier technologies, including LNG carriers, floating storage and regasification units, and liquefied carbon dioxide carriers. The group is collaborating with ABS and Siemens to develop digital twin technology for safety assessments of ammonia-fueled vessels. HD Hyundai also presented its three-tank LNG containment system at a seminar hosted by GTT. Further technological advancements were announced through various Approvals in Principle (AiP). HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) received Lloyd’s Register approval for VesselWise, an autonomous machinery optimization technology, and ABS approval for a 100-megawatt-class barge-mounted power plant for AI data centers. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) secured DNV approval for a 271,000 CBM LNG carrier design and Korean Register approval for a 50,000 cubic meter LPG tanker. Additionally, HD KSOE, HD HHI, and Lloyd’s Register signed an AiP to develop a 185,000 cbm LNG carrier featuring hybrid electric propulsion. Other developments include Hanwha Power receiving ABS approval for an ammonia multi-cargo capable LNG bunkering vessel, and Babcock LGE obtaining Lloyd’s Register approval for ecoAPEX cargo handling technology. During the same exhibition, HHI expanded its portfolio with AiPs for a cruise-focused LNG bunkering vessel and collaborations regarding hybrid electric and wind-assisted systems. Building on these advancements, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) has achieved further milestones in LNG carrier design.
