Veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling was released by the Los Angeles Chargers, making him a free agent.

Shortly after his release, the Pittsburgh Steelers moved to re-sign the 31-year-old to their practice squad. The Steelers sought to bolster their receiving corps following injuries to Roman Wilson, Michael Pittman Jr., and Ben Skowronek, which resulted in multiple players being placed on injured reserve.

Despite re-signing to the practice squad, Valdes-Scantling remained off the roster for the Steelers’ Week 7 game against the New Orleans Saints in Paris. The team missed the Saturday deadline to make him eligible for the Sunday matchup. Head coach Mike McCarthy noted that Valdes-Scantling appeared to integrate quickly with the team, aided by his previous familiarity with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but the team instead utilized practice squad members Brandon Johnson and Brandon Smith for the game.
