Researchers from Tohoku University, the Earth-Life Science Institute, and the Institute of Science Tokyo have published a study in The Planetary Science Journal regarding the distribution of formaldehyde on ancient Mars.

Using computer models to simulate the period between 3.6 and 3.8 billion years ago, the team mapped how formaldehyde was likely transported to the surface via rainfall. The study indicates that formaldehyde production was driven by humidity, where UV light broke apart water molecules to release reactive hydrogen. The resulting distribution was highly uneven, with regions near Elysium Mons and Tharsis receiving roughly ten times the global average, while NASA rover landing sites received less than the average.

The research highlights formaldehyde as a critical chemical because its interaction with water can trigger reactions producing sugars, amino acids, and other complex organic molecules essential for life. This provides a potential mechanism for how the chemical building blocks for life could have been distributed across the Martian surface during warm, wet spells.
