Scientific research into the ancient geological and watery history of Mars has progressed through both meteorite analysis and orbital mapping.

Initial studies focused on the Martian meteorite ‘Black Beauty’ (NWA 7034). Using neutron and X-ray tomography, an international research team identified hydrogen-rich hotspots within the rock. These findings, which involve fragments as old as 4.48 billion years, suggest that water interacted with the Martian surface in specific, concentrated zones within the ancient crust.

Newer analysis published in ‘Geophysical Research Letters’ provides more granular detail on these processes. By examining a tiny 12 by 8 by 2 millimeter sample using non-destructive X-ray and neutron tomography, scientists identified minerals and compounds rich in hydrogen created by ancient chemical reactions between water and rock. While the meteorite does not contain liquid water, neutron analysis successfully detected hydrogen traces concentrated in the oldest fragments, accounting for approximately 11 percent of the total water bound in the minerals of the analyzed sample. Researchers suggest that volcanic activity or intense impacts may have introduced water into the young Martian crust.

Subsequent findings expanded this understanding by linking meteorite data with orbital mapping. Evidence suggests that Oxia Planum, the intended landing site for the European Space Agency’s Rosalind Franklin rover, is part of a vast ancient water system. Clay-rich deposits at this site may have formed from a massive body of water or significant groundwater flooding approximately four billion years ago. Together, these studies provide a clearer picture of the chemical and watery environments present during Mars’ earliest stages.
