Conservation efforts for the Marsican brown bear in Italy’s Abruzzo region involve a combination of field monitoring, corporate sponsorship, and regional government funding to mitigate human-wildlife conflict. Initial initiatives include the ‘Salviamo l’Orso’ association’s work in the Roveto Valley, which focuses on technical maintenance and monitoring. This is supported by the cooperative Cantina Tollo, which funds the regeneration of satellite collars used for bear tracking through its ‘Animaletti’ organic wine line. To further assist local livestock farmers, the Sirente Velino Regional Park has utilized funding from the Abruzzo Region to acquire 55 anti-bear chicken coops. This program, which also extends to the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park and other local reserves, prioritizes farmers who have experienced bear-related damage within the last two years. The initiative aims to facilitate coexistence between human activities and protected fauna through preventative measures. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-17: Sirente Velino Regional Park acquires 55 anti-bear coops Sirente Velino Regional Park has acquired 55 anti-bear chicken coops for farmers in Abruzzo, Italy, to mitigate conflicts with the Marsican brown bear and support livestock protection. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/sirente-velino-regional-park-acquires-55-anti-bear-coops ### 2026-09-10: Marsican brown bear conservation receives support in Abruzzo Conservation efforts for the Marsican brown bear in Abruzzo are being bolstered by volunteer field monitoring and corporate funding from Cantina Tollo to support satellite tracking technology. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/marsican-brown-bear-conservation-receives-support-in-abruzzo --- Cite as: Marsican brown bear conservation in Abruzzo.
