Sources: 110. Developments: 2. Martha Stewart faced social media backlash after posting images of herself in a Halloween costume depicting a homeless person. The costume included tattered clothing and a sign reading, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!” Stewart initially claimed the costume was intended to raise awareness regarding the homelessness crisis in the United States. However, critics labeled the portrayal as “out of touch” and “insensitive,” particularly noting the use of the imagery to promote a commercial candle collection. The controversy grew when Stewart posted photos of various breads and pastries, which users criticized for creating a sharp contrast with her depiction of hunger. Following the criticism, Stewart issued apologies on Instagram. She admitted her initial defense was insufficient, stating, “I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry.” During a corporate rally in Orlando, Florida, Stewart provided a new explanation for the outfit. She alleged that “Today” show co-host Craig Melvin accidentally spilled chocolate on the sweater she had originally intended to wear. She claimed that, with only ten minutes to prepare for a subsequent party, she settled on what she described as the “easiest costume” option. ## Timeline ### 2026-11-03: Martha Stewart apologizes for controversial Halloween costume Martha Stewart apologized for her Halloween costume depicting a homeless person, later claiming a wardrobe mishap caused by a “Today” host led to the last-minute decision. 13 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/martha-stewart-apologizes-for-homeless-person-halloween-costume ### 2026-11-01: Martha Stewart apologizes for offensive Halloween costume Martha Stewart apologized twice after facing backlash for a Halloween costume depicting a hungry homeless person, which critics called insensitive and out of touch. 104 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/martha-stewart-faces-backlash-over-halloween-costume --- Cite as: Martha Stewart Halloween costume controversy.
