Mata do Bussaco, a 105-hectare woodland in Mealhada, Portugal, has been officially certified as a therapeutic forest by the Healing Forest International Certification Office. This designation makes it the first site of its kind on the Iberian Peninsula and the fourth therapeutic forest recognized globally.

The certification, which is valid until 2031, was granted following a scientific audit of the area’s air quality, acoustics, botanical density, and accessibility. The forest is characterized by high biodiversity, containing roughly 250 species of trees and shrubs, as well as over 150 species of vertebrates.

Managed by the Fundação Mata do Bussaco, the initiative aims to promote mental health and wellness through scientific research and guided experiences, such as a two-kilometer trail designed for stress reduction and relaxation.
