A major water pipe burst in the Matalascañas coastal area caused a landslide and significant property damage. The rupture of a 200mm diameter pipe released a massive amount of water which, due to the absence of a retaining wall, caused a slope of earth to collapse onto several homes.

Three residences were severely affected, resulting in homes being inundated with water and sand and vehicles being buried. While no personal injuries were reported, one family was relocated to a nearby hotel by the water management company, Aqualia.

The Matalascañas Homeowners Association has demanded an urgent renewal of the water supply network, citing the deterioration of decades-old fiber cement pipes. The association criticized local authorities for resurfacing streets without replacing obsolete underlying infrastructure, arguing that such projects fail to address the root cause of frequent leaks.
